How do I clean leather boots?

I would take them to a local shoe shop. They have most likely run across every scenario and have solutions to care for and fix most problems. I would also suggest calling the manufacturer for a suggestion. I have read that antibacterial hand gel might work as well as white spirits, but that was for actual leather.
