What are the rule behind playing mythic cards?

for instance my "liliana vess" has just 5 in the bottom right corner, does that make her a 5/5 creature? or does that have to do with my life? and her ability's have all the same black pentagons with like "+1, target player discards a card", + 1 to what? my health. confused! please help :)
