Ophthalmic ointment and guinea pigs?

i work in a pet store and when the guinea pigs get an eye infection we take them 2 the vet and they give them opthalmic ointment, i have a guinea pig at home that i think might have an eye infection also... is it ok if i put the opthamlic ointment if im not sure if thats what he has althought it looks just like it just not as bad would it hurt him and please dont say take him 2 the vet bec at this very moment i cant (dont get paid till next week) but i wanna make sure he doesnt get worse please only answer if ur 100% sure
