Why were people who criticized the origins of Christianity continually repressed by Christians?

In 1774 the Protestant Reformation was in effect. So any thing against the Catholic Church was "Shot down".In 1829 that year was the End of the Reformation.so it Was the same reason as before.In 1863 many years after the end of The reformation, the Catholic church was in full effect in Europe so like i said if its against it the responsible party will be shot down. all of these storys are based around that church.Not the Christauin church
